Extracurricular Programs

The extracurricular programs are chosen to supplement the School in the Hills experience.  These programs are coordinated through the school.  Age requirements, days of the week and cost vary by program.

PROGRAMS BEING OFFERED FALL – 2018

Me Power – Dream Beautiful

In this program, students will learn to honor their uniqueness by developing soaring self-esteem and unstoppable self-confidence. They will also learn how to use meditation to help with emotional resilience and self-coach habits to manage everyday ups and downs.

TOTS – Teams of Tomorrow – Fundamental and Creative Basketball

This program curriculum teaches basketball ball-handling and dribbling skills to fun, age-appropriate music.  Students are also exposed to fine & gross motor activities, higher-order thinking and listening activities.  Children will not only have a blast but will become more self-disciplined & self- confident.

Little Coders – Coding With Kids

This Little Coders program is an opportunity for young children to develop their computational thinking skills, build their first programs, and have fun with friends! The curriculum is designed specifically for early readers and takes into account cognitive abilities as well as attention span typical for ages 5-7. Students are introduced to basic coding concepts in a variety of ways, from playing coding board games like Robot Turtles to programming their first games or interactive stories. We will use age appropriate online tools, including code.org, Lightbot, Kodable or Scratch. After the camp, students will be able to share their projects with family and friends and continue programming at home with their Coding with Kids Scratch account.

Handwriting Enrichment – Sharon Wisnieski

Handwriting Heroes “Little Learners” – Ages 4 ½ – 6 and “Littlest Learners” – Ages 3 ½ – 4 ½ – Discover the fun in capital and lowercase letters!  Each letter has a story to tell & an adventure to enjoy. Using the Handwriting without Tears curriculum and various other sensory rich materials & tasks, your child will absorb accurate letter orientation, stroke sequence, & placement on the lines.  Appropriate grasp will also be practiced to help prepare these little hands for accurate & efficient writing now & as the years go by!

Game Development for 3rd – 5th  – Coding With Kids

This course introduces kids to computer programming through the fun and excitement of building video games. Working in Scratch, a drag-and-drop programming tool, students will create everything from animations to multi-level games. Beginner students will learn the core concepts of programming a game, such as loops, conditionals, and variables. Intermediate students will level-up to more complex concepts like nested conditionals and functions with parameters. Projects are updated each session, so returning students will have new challenges to work through and advance their creativity and knowledge to the next level.

Spanish Immersion Program – FLIEC Languages

Spanish Immersion Program: Spanish-language immersion program offered twice a week. The children will learn both Spanish language as well as the cultures and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries. The program has a progressive curriculum so as to help your child acquire speaking fluency and familiarity with writing. Teachers also provide optional on-line exercises so children and parents can practice Spanish at home. Taught by experienced native speakers (to learn more about us visit www.fliec.com).

Gymnastics – Brown’s Gymnastics

Brown’s Gymnastics is a mobile non-competitive gymnastics program that brings the gym to you! All classes are taught by trained and qualified coaches who love children and fitness. This program covers cartwheels, round offs, front handsprings, back handsprings, handstands, headstands, balance beam, trampoline, and horizontal bar.

Scribbles for Littles – Lindsey Smith “Building a foundation for creativity and self-expression”

Big Scribbles Art Class – ages 3-6 – Let’s get creative!  Scribbles for Littles Art Program focuses on fostering your child’s creative development by providing art lessons that allow freedom of choice, thought, and feeling.  Our young artists will have the opportunity to explore their artistic talents with various mediums while practicing different techniques.  Each week we will learn about a new artist and explore their way of creating.  We will explore various forms of art such as drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, and much more!

Beginner Dance Combination Class – Morgan Blackford

This class is for Toddlers, ages 2-3, and Primary children, ages 4-6.  In this class children will explore the basics of creative dance (shape, form, and musicality) interspersed with age-appropriate ballet and jazz exercises. On the last day of class, parents will be invited in to see a short recital based on the moves they’ve learned during the program!

American Sign Language Class – Tina Cavanaugh

Toddlers (ages 2-3) and Primaries (ages 4-6) will have a blast in this fun, interactive class where they will learn a new way to talk about things they are already learning in their classrooms (colors, feelings, friends, animals, and more!). Handouts for parents are also included with each new theme of signs. Learning sign language stimulates the brain, dexterity skills are improved and it’s especially helpful when a child is growing up in a multi-lingual home. The class is just hard enough to be challenging but easy enough to be fun.

Elementary children (ages 7-10) will learn to fingerspell the alphabet, count to ten in sign language and learn signs in themes like colors, safety, friends, animals and more. Sign language is a fun way for children to communicate about things they already know and to learn about diversity. It’s just hard enough to challenge them but easy enough to be fun. They will also learn a song and go home with a CD so they can show you what they know. Handouts for parents are also included with each new theme of signs.  Classes are 30 minutes for Toddlers and Primary and 45 – hr. for Elementary.

Martial Arts – Ernie Reyes World Martial Arts

Ernie Reyes World Martial Arts brings its award-winning Little Dragons program to School in the Hills. Not just for punching and kicking, this world-renowned curriculum is designed specifically for children four through seven years old, teaching self-discipline, respect, and self-defense. Weekly 45-minute classes include a mix of technique, physical fitness, and fun!

Zumba Kids Jr. w/ Hilary Cate

Perfect for younger Zumba® fans! Kids 4-7 years old get the chance to be active and jam out to their favorite music.  Zumba® Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. We break down the steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure.  Helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporate fitness as a natural part of children’s lives by making fitness fun. Classes incorporate key childhood development elements like leadership, respect, team work, confidence, self-esteem, memory, creativity, coordination, cultural awareness.

Soccer Shots!

An introduction to the world’s greatest game! Soccer Shots offers a quality, high-energy soccer program with principled instruction wrapped in fun. Soccer Shots sessions are led by trained instructors with a goal to creatively introduce your child to the sport of soccer. Sessions incorporate: basic soccer skills, use of imagination, fun fitness activities & exercises, character building, coordination, balance and agility development.

Intro to Coding  – Sowmya Jadda

An introductory course of Visual Coding for kids! Our Little Coders program helps the children make their abstract thoughts visible on paper and on the screen so they can tinker with those ideas and grow to be more creative. The classes will have two main activities. Each class begins with an “unplugged” activity where fundamentals and concepts required for computational thinking are introduced and practiced with games and activities that the children are already comfortable with. The second part of the class will include instruction of visual programming and practice time for kids on the tablet. The program focuses on understanding concepts and creating simple animations that incorporates those concepts. Digital skills in the modern world are a MUST and coding should be like reading and writing. It should be taught early on!

Sportball

Build your child’s skills in 8 popular sports in a non-competitive class that helps develop motor skills, athleticism and basic techniques. Sports include:  soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, football, volleyball, golf and tennis.
